Mikhail Zakharievich Rudakov

Painter, graphic artist. Honored Artist of the RSFSR since 1982. Born in the village of Vesely Podol, Khorolsky uyezd, Poltava province. Graduated from the Kharkov Art Institute (1933-1935). In 1934 was admitted to the Union of Artists. He participated in exhibitions since 1939. In 1934-1940 he worked in book graphics, in periodicals, painted in oil. In 1940 was drafted into the army, served in Peremyshl in Western Ukraine, where he met Polish artist P. Stroński, who had a great influence on him. In 1941 at the front he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner. In September 1941, severely wounded near Poltava, he was captured in the "Kiev Cauldron". After being shot in the head by a German officer, he survived. Arrested in February 1943 in Podolsk, Moscow region after release from captivity for "inspection". Lived in Kharkov, where he was arrested on 03.03.1944 and on 08.07.1944 was sentenced to five years' imprisonment with subsequent loss of rights for "anti-Soviet agitation in wartime" (article 58-10, part 2 of the Criminal Code). He served his term in the North Pechora ITL (Komi ASSR), from August 1947 to February 1949 - in the Ob ITL, then in the Northern Railway ITL, by the end of his term - at the camp "Sovkhoz Cherevkovo" in the Arkhangelsk region. He worked at the logging site, then became an assistant camp doctor, drew a lot. In 1949 he was sent to the settlement in the Arkhangelsk region. Lived in Solvychegodsk and Kotlas, worked as a chief artist of the Kotlas Drama Theater, in 1950 he was again admitted to the Kotlas Drama Theater.
